- The challenge
- Turn complex course submission, review, and transfer requirements into clear, guided experiences for educators and students.
Submitting a course for approval involved a lot of information, a lot of requirements, and multiple steps between educators and administrators.
My job was to help make that process easier to understand and much harder to get wrong.
Working with the University of California Office of the President, I designed a guided course submission experience that walked educators through the process step by step. Instead of confronting users with one massive form, the experience worked more like a wizard, helping them provide the right information at the right time and catch problems before submitting.
Once a course entered the review process, educators needed to know what was happening with it. I designed the experience for tracking review status as it moved through administration, giving users a clearer sense of where their course stood and what, if anything, they needed to do next.
I also worked on a course search experience, making it easier to find and explore courses already in the system.
Helping students find a path to UC.
On the other side of the experience were students trying to answer a very different question: Which of my community college courses will transfer?
I designed a tool that helped students identify which courses from their community college could transfer to the University of California. The goal was to take complicated transfer information and turn it into something students could actually navigate, helping them understand how the courses they were taking could fit into their path toward a UC education.
It was a different audience and a different problem, but the design challenge was remarkably similar: take a complicated system full of rules and requirements and make it easy.
Throughout the project, I worked closely with client stakeholders to understand the requirements behind these workflows and translate them into interfaces that felt straightforward to the people actually using them. Visually, I stayed close to UC brand standards, finding room to improve the experience without reinventing a system users already knew.
